Are we there yet? Artists Granite Calimpong and Brent Rogers may never know, but their adventures and discoveries along the way are on view at Pittsburgh Glass Center (PGC) for everyone to see Feb. 7 – Apr. 20, 2014. The new exhibition “Halfway to Somewhere” is the result of a residency at PGC. A free opening reception with the artists will be held on Friday, Feb. 7 from 6 to 9pm.

Granite Calimpong of Seattle and Brent Rogers of Chicago came together at PGC as resident artists in 2013 to experiment, try new ideas and make art in a nonlinear way using different materials and new approaches and processes.

Calimpong’s work is typically blown and cold worked glass that is simple and clean with a focus on the form and surface. Rogers’ work, on the other hand, focuses more on content rather than form. He uses imagery, lamination and painting on glass to convey various concepts. Because their styles are so distinct, they said that there was a lot of meeting in the middle on decision-making during the residency and production of the work.

“This is the first big show for both of us and we really don't know where it will lead us. It is certain that having a dedicated period of time at the Pittsburgh Glass Center has been amazing for both of us and our development as individual artists. We are very aware of the fact that there is no clear destination. There is no termination point of where this work ends and new work begins, just comfort in the fact that the journey is and has been enjoyable,” said Calimpong.
